Why Am I A Christian? Because God Exists

The theme for the Lim Ah Pin congregation for the year 2026 is “Ye Are The Light Of The World”. This theme reminds us that each and everyone of us must be involved in the work of personal evangelism. Yet, some may feel inadequate or uncertain as to where to start the discussion with a friend or family member. Each of us must be ready to give an answer / defense regarding our beliefs (cf. 1 Peter 3:15), and so over the next few months, I hope it will be useful to examine the topic – “Why Am I A Christian?”, beginning with the first point – “Because God Exists”.

Imagine in your mind’s eye that an Airbus A380 is parked right in front of you. It is the largest commercial airliner in existence today. It stands 72 metres long, or about ¾ of a football field. It is about 24 meters tall, or about as tall as an 8-storey building. It can carry hundreds of passengers on two decks. It is an incredible flying object.

Would you believe me if I told you that this Airbus A380 came into existence out of nothing? Surely, you would scoff at that nonsensical idea.  After all, the Airbus A380 was produced in massive factories all over Europe. Thousands of engineers and technicians put many man-hours into assembling the parts together to make this enormous airplane. Creation demands a Creator!

Furthermore, imagine with me that you could break down the Airbus A380 into its individual parts. You could put its 4 massive turbofan engines on one side, its fuselage on another, its wings and control surfaces on yet another side. Now imagine that a huge tornado swept through the factory, and caught up all these various parts and pieces of the aircraft, and after the tornado swept through, there stood a pristine, brand new, functional Airbus A380 aeroplane.

Ridiculous thought, do I hear you say? You would be absolutely right in saying so. After all, it is evident that a lot of thought and consideration went into designing this aircraft, ensuring that the parts fit together and functioned as they ought to. Someone then had to translate the design into reality, to produce an Airbus A380. Design demands a Designer!

How can I know that God exists? When I consider the universe around me, the millions upon millions of stars, all in their orderly orbits, I understand that it is more logical that SOMEONE put them there, rather than them popping into existence out of nothing out of a so-called “Big Bang”.

The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork. (Psalm 19:1)

How can I know that God exists? When I consider the world that exists around me, the plants and living creatures, I understand that it is reasonable to believe that SOMEONE created them, rather than them coming to life through “spontaneous generation”.

For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: (Romans 1:20)

How can I know that God exists? When I consider the human body, how it is a system of interconnected systems working in harmony with each other (e.g. respiratory system, circulatory system, etc.), I understand that it is reasonable to believe that SOMEONE took great care to design human beings, rather than them being the product of chaotic evolution.

I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well. (Psalm 139:14)

Creation demands a Creator, and Design demands a Designer. Who is this SOMEONE who is the Great Creator and Designer? It is the God of the Universe, through whom all things exist.

For every house is builded by some man; but he that built all things is God. (Hebrews 3:4)
Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created. (Revelation 4:11)
