The Day That God Listened to the Voice of a Man

ree

“And there was no day like that before it or after it, that the LORD hearkened unto the voice of a man: for the LORD fought for Israel” (Joshua 10:14)

There was not a day like this one. It was a day when the sun stood still. It was a day when God fought for His people. It was a day when God listened to the voice of a man. Joshua and the Israelites were fighting their enemies in the land of Canaan. It seemed that they needed more time in order to utterly defeat their foes. Joshua requested for the sun to “stand still.” And so it did. The sun stood still until all the enemies of the Israelites were vanquished.

1. If God can make the sun stand still, is anything too hard for Him to accomplish?

No, nothing is too hard for God! God has shown, time and again, that He can do impossible things. He gave 90-year Sarah a son (Genesis 21:1-7). He parted the Red Sea for the Israelites (Exodus 14:21-22). He brought down the walls of Jericho (Joshua 6:20). He raised our Lord Jesus from the dead (Matthew 28:6). While man’s power may be limited, God’s power is not! (Matthew 19:26).

Have you ever encountered a difficult problem that seemed impossible to overcome? Have you ever thought that there was no way for you to win? If we focus on our own strength, we will surely lose. However, if God is on our side, nothing is too difficult to overcome!  No matter how difficult the problem may be, God has promised that He will provide that way of escape, so that we can bear it (1 Corinthians 10:13). God has promised that, through Jesus, we can find the strength to overcome all things! (Philippians 4:13). Will you rely on God’s power today?

“For with God nothing shall be impossible” (Luke 1:37)

2. If God can fight for Israel, can He fight for you too?

Yes, God can fight for us! God has, time and again, fought for His people. The Lord fought for Joshua, and brought down great stones from Heaven (Joshua 10:11). The Lord fought for Gideon, and with 300 men, put to flight 135,000 Midianites (Judges 7:19-25). The Lord fought for Hezekiah, and slew 185,000 Assyrians with one angel (2 Kings 19:35). When God enters the battle, none can stand against Him.

Have you ever felt alone in your struggles? Have you found yourself outnumbered by your enemies? God reminds us that we are not alone. God has promised that He will never leave us nor forsake us (Hebrews 13:5-6). Our Lord has promised that, as we go into the world with the gospel, He is with us always, even to the end of the world (Matthew 28:19-20). Will you call upon the Lord to fight for you?

“Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us” (Romans 8:37)

3. If God can listen to Joshua, can He listen to you too?

Yes, God listens to us! God’s ears are open to His faithful people. Joshua called for the sun to stand still, and God answered (Joshua 10:13-14). Elijah called for it to stop raining in the land, and God answered (James 5:17-18). Hezekiah prayed for his life to be extended, and God answered (2 Kings 20:1-7).

Have you ever felt that you have no one to confide in? Have you found yourself thinking that God is not listening to your prayers? God has promised that His ears are always open to the prayers of His faithful (1 Peter 3:12). God has promised that the prayers of the righteous are powerful (James 5:16). Will you pray persistently to the Father?

“And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him” (1 John 5:14-15)
