Yes, brethren – your eyes did not fail you. In this article, I am going to suggest some reasons why one should not attend the midweek Bible class.
Reason #1 – “BECAUSE I ALREADY KNOW IT ALL”
We do not have to attend the midweek Bible class because we already have an excellent understanding of the Bible. After all, most of us have been Christians for years, and have listened to hundreds of sermons and Bible classes already. There is no need for us to “meditate on God’s law day and night” (Psalm 1:1) since we already “know it all”, and there is no need for us to “grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:18) when we already know the Bible inside-out.
Reason #2 – “BECAUSE I CAN SHOW LOVE TO MY BRETHREN IN OTHER WAYS”
We do not have to attend the midweek Bible class because I can love and encourage my brethren in other ways. After all, how will our collective presence in the midweek Bible class encourage each other? Surely, assembling together for one hour on a Thursday does not “provoke (stir up) unto love and good works” and it does not serve to “exhort one another” (Hebrews 10:24-25).
Reason #3 – “BECAUSE THE ELDERS HAVE NO RIGHT TO TELL ME WHAT TO DO”
We have no need to attend the Bible class just because the elders are encouraging us to do so. After all, are they not normal men just like you and me? What gives them the right to dictate what I do on a Thursday night? There is no reason why I need to obey and submit to them (Hebrews 13:17) when they plead with us to attend the midweek Bible class.
CONCLUSION
Brethren, if it was not abundantly clear by now, the preceding words were not written to give us reasons (excuses!!!) to miss out on attending the Thursday night Bible class. Rather, I hope that these words pierced your hearts, and reminded us that we do not know everything in the Bible, that we should encourage our brethren through our presence at the midweek assembly, and that we ought to submit to the elders’ exhortation for us to attend the midweek Bible class.
May we continue to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, and may we continue to take advantage of the midweek Bible class and use it as an avenue to grow. God bless you in this new year, as we strive to do what is right.
